Career In Meteorology

I really want to go to graduate school in Meteorology. What is the best undergraduate major for it?

I am currently majoring in Physics but I am thinking majoring in Geography with a minor in physics would be better. What would give me the best chance to go to graduate school in Meteorology. Also, an undergraduate degree in Meteorology is not offered by my school and I can't transfer. Thank you so much!

  1. Why can't you transfer? Get in touch with the graduate schools you are interested in attending. Find out from them what they would prefer. I can't tell you what all schools want, but if you are interested in research, I 'll send you a link. This school also has programs in marine meteorolgy, and aviation meteorolgy. Good luck.
  2. If your institution does not have a meteorology department of its own, check with the physics advisor to see what courses are relevant. I took one b4 meteorology called "applications of physics to environmental problems" and it was one of my favorites overall. Also step into your U's dept of geography. These are the traditional departments for anything related to meteorology. Many schools have new hybrid areas of study such as "interdiscplinary studies", ecology or "environmental studies". Can't be more specific because I don't know where you are. Check out some of the career guidance on this site. http://www.stuffintheair.com/career-in-meteorology.html Hope these help.
  3. Since modern Meteorology is highly dependent on mathematical modeling and a Physics major is more dependent on the mastery of mathematics than a Geography major, a Physics major will be more impressive to the meteorology graduate admissions committee (assuming comparable grades). Also Physics is considered a "hard science" while "Geography" is considered a "soft science" or even a "social science". Successful completion of a Physics major demonstrates solid analytical competence, is looked upon favorably by any of the scientific disciplines, and will probably even be better than a Meteorology undergrad major. Consider Geography as a minor or second major.
