Career In Meteorology

What percentage of TV weathermen are not actually meteorologists?

I have heard many TV stations hire weather forecasters because they are good at presenting infomation. Some even have no background in meteorology or degree. So how many of these TV weathermen exist? Are television meteorologists allowed to explain phenonmia with proper scienctfic language or do the station directors tell them how to explain things? Which then would cause them to commit "bad science". I am interested in this because I am current attend Penn State and majoring in meteorology.

  1. I know that Sam Champion from newyork is not a meteorologist. I am not sure about any others.
  2. That depends strongly on what part of the country you are talking about. Somewhere like Seattle, where the main weather event is rain and cold, it's not that essential for a TV weather man to actually know the meteorology behind it. He's just reading the news like the anchors do. Somewhere like Oklahoma or Texas, it's absolutely essential that the TV weather man be fully knowledgeable about weather because they often have to warn the public at a moment's notice based on nothing but their own knowledge of the situation. I grew up in Tornado Alley and I can assure you that every TV weatherman down there has at least a BS in Meteorology, usually from OU or Texas A&M.
  3. I have noticed that some of the local "weathermen" on my various local news broadcasts are not real weathermen, just pretty eye candy. The ones that didnt go to school for this probably dont know what on earth they are talking about at first, I'm sure its like any job, you learn what this and that mean as you go along and with time can speak about the subject with authority. I'm sure that the licensed meterologists make considerably more that the eye candy weatherman, plus they have more options for employment. The eye candy really are only qualified for television work. btw, its seems like they all are always getting it wrong in my area. Really really wrong, like they may say that it will rain, and then its sunny.
