- You are not studying to be a Meteorologist in HS. Colleges want a well rounded academic student no matter what their major is going to be. To have more options with colleges, make sure to maintain a high GPA and take honors and AP level classes. You will need from high school 4 years of english 3 years of science with two labs-chemistry, biology and physics are good to take 3 years of math- algebra 1&2, geometry and having calculus is a good idea 2/3 years of the same foreign language 2 years of history- US and World Check out Valparaiso in IN. They have one of the best meteorology departments in the US
- If you want to major in meteorology, you want to take four years of math and four years of lab science in high school. You want to work your way up to advanced courses in those areas, if at all possible. The ideal science track would include biology, chemistry, physics, plus one advanced course in one of those topics. You want to take as much math as possible, so that you can take calculus in college. If you want to be an on-air meteorologist, and if your high school offers activities or even classes that let you explore on-air journalism, then do those. But if they don't offer such activities, that's okay. You can do that in college. Does NC State offer meteorology as a major? If not, then you can major in physics or another related major (such as oceanic science, atmospheric science, etc.), so long as they also offer the meteorological courses that you need. UNC Charlotte offers a specific meteorology major, if you're interested. You can find other colleges that offer the types of majors you'd need here: http://www.ametsoc.org/amsucar_curricula/index.cfm
