Career In Meteorology

Which College should I chose to go to for meteorology?

I am 14 years old and am looking into future careers and colleges. I have been interested in atmospheric sciences or more commonly known as meteorology. I am mainly interested in the storm chasing aspect of the career. I would also settle for working in a government run operation like the National Weather Service. I am not interested in broad casting. Which colleges would be best for my interests?

  1. You have only one option. Tornado Alley!! The University of Oklahoma. A brand new facility, brand new equipment. They even have "Dorothy" in the lobby of the building (from the movie Twister). You can get a tour of the facility along with the NATIONAL Weather Service that's housed right there. I was there last year and watched students welding on a truck that was being customized for storm tracking. I'm watching the news right now, and totally peeved because they've preempted Letterman for yet ANOTHER tornado and hail risk. Sheesh!! The storms and hail and tornadoes will still be here when you are ready. http://weather.ou.edu/ Facilities The 244,000-square-foot National Weather Center opened its doors in September 2006. One of the largest facilities of its kind in the world, it houses 12 OU, state and federal organizations with more than 650 employees, faculty, researchers and students. The center accommodates OU’s academic and research programs in meteorology and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Norman-based weather research and operations programs. The University programs in the center include: * School of Meteorology * Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms * Center for Spatial Analysis * Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies * Oklahoma Climatological Survey * International Center for Natural Hazards and Disaster Research The NOAA organizations include: * National Severe Storms Laboratory * National Weather Service Forecast Office * NEXRAD Radar Operations Center * Storm Prediction Center * Warning Decision Training Branch The College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences administers the facility, where the first classes were offered in fall 2006
