Career In Meteorology

Would a degree in meteorology be better for the Navy or the Air Force?

Would I most likely be stationed on a ship in the Navy with this degree (as an officer)? Do they have any need for a land-based meteorologist? I would hate to spend the next twenty years of my life at sea. Would kind of job would I have in the Air Force? I would think that the air traffic controllers would be enlisted instead of officers.

  1. EIther. That is a Specialist degree (as oppose to a Bachelor's degree in the Arts say). If a person specializes in the medical, or scientific fields, the Service uses their education and skills in that respective field.
  2. If you join the Navy you will spend time at sea no matter what. That's why I joined the AF. What does meteorology have to do with air traffic controllers? They are two seperate jobs in the AF, but yes the air traffic controllers are enlisted.
  3. USAF 4 LIFE
  4. It would be more challenging at sea because the ship is always moving and weather is a big factor in aircraft carrier operations. For shore duty you would most likely go to a Naval Air Station. The sea shore rotation is not too bad. I think it's 5 shore 3 sea. Navy ATC is all enlisted with officers (mustangs) who have worked their way up through the enlisted ranks.
  5. ATC is enlisted. Do you already have a degree in Meteorology? If so, apply for OTS. If not, look into AFROTC. We have scholarships for you.
  6. If you are trying to stay out of the sea you should probably join the ChAir Force. Regardless of what job you pick, with a 4 yr degree you'll still be an officer.
  7. Metroguy... B.S. and B.A. degrees are equal, with just different elective courses taken.
  8. Air Traffic Controllers are enlisted. If you would hate being at sea for 20 years then don't go Navy.
